A peri bottle is a squeezable bottle with an angled nozzle designed to rinse the perineal area with warm water after using the toilet, one of the most essential postpartum recovery tools for vaginal birth. Our upside-down-compatible design with angled nozzle makes it significantly easier to rinse the perineum from the front, without contorting or straining. BPA-free. Can be used with plain water, diluted witch hazel or brewed herbal rinse.

In the first days and weeks after a vaginal delivery, urinating stings. Urine contacting tender, swollen perineal tissue or stitches is one of the most common complaints in the immediate postpartum period. A peri bottle solves this immediately: filling it with warm water and directing the flow over the area as you urinate dilutes the urine and provides instant relief.

It is also the most hygienic way to cleanse the perineal area without friction, far gentler than toilet paper on stitches or bruised tissue.

Why the Angled Nozzle Matters

A standard squeezy bottle requires you to reach round or under, which is uncomfortable in the first days after birth. Our upside-down-compatible angled nozzle design lets you position the bottle over the toilet and direct water precisely where needed without awkward positioning. Midwives frequently recommend angled peri bottles specifically for this reason.

How to Use

  1. Fill the bottle with comfortably warm water before each bathroom visit.
  2. Optionally, add a few drops of alcohol-free witch hazel, or a small amount of cooled herbal rinse from your Postpartum Bath Soak.
  3. Screw the angled cap on tightly.
  4. Position the nozzle at the front of the perineal area.
  5. Squeeze gently to direct a stream of water over the area as you urinate. This dilutes urine and relieves stinging.
  6. Continue rinsing from front to back after using the toilet.
  7. Pat dry gently afterwards with a clean, soft cloth.
  8. Follow with Peri Spray for additional soothing relief.

Materials

Bottle: EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate), soft, squeezable, BPA-free. Nozzle and cap: ABS -  durable, BPA-free. Dishwasher safe for regular cleaning. Easy to keep in a hospital bag.

When to Start Using It

Take it to the hospital. Use it from your first bathroom visit after birth. Many women keep a second bottle in each bathroom they use in the early weeks. A third in the changing bag means you are covered away from home. The Peri Bottle is included in our New Mum Essentials Set and Postpartum Essentials Bundle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a peri bottle used for?

A peri bottle is used to rinse the perineal area with warm water after using the toilet after childbirth. It relieves the stinging caused by urine contacting sore perineal tissue or stitches, and is the most hygienic way to keep the area clean without using friction from toilet paper on healing skin.

Can I use a peri bottle with stitches?

Yes. A peri bottle is specifically recommended for use with perineal stitches. The gentle stream of water cleanses without any friction or contact pressure on healing tissue. This is far more comfortable than using toilet paper when you have stitches or a perineal tear.

What can I put in a peri bottle besides water?

Warm water alone is effective. You can also add a few drops of alcohol-free witch hazel for additional soothing and anti-inflammatory benefit, or a small amount of cooled herbal tea brewed from a postpartum herbal bath soak. Avoid adding anything with alcohol or synthetic fragrance, which can irritate sensitive postpartum skin.

When can I start using a peri bottle after birth?

From your very first trip to the bathroom after birth. Keep it filled and next to the toilet from day one. Most women use a peri bottle for 2–6 weeks postpartum, until perineal soreness and stitches have healed enough that toilet paper becomes comfortable again.

Do I need a special peri bottle or can I use any squeezy bottle?

A purpose-made peri bottle with an angled nozzle is significantly easier to use than a standard squeezy bottle. The angled nozzle allows you to direct water accurately from the front without contorting, which is important when you are sore and moving carefully in the early days after birth.
